There are many opportunities on Island where you can recycle. Hurley's in South Sound offers paper and plastic recycling while Camana Bay offers glass and aluminium recycling. These are just a few examples of places on island that provide recycling as an option. www.joinin.ky has a list of every place on island that recycle. Part of Cay-Blue KY's mission is to eventually make composting as popular as recycling is on island to do so we suggest that you keep a plastic bin to keep organic matter that can be broken down in. Up to 30 per cent of an average household’s waste is organic and can be turned into compost. Composting is the best way to treat organic waste as not only does it save valuable landfill space by reducing the amount we throw away, but it replaces commercially produced peat products which can damage important wildlife sites. Adding compost to your soil will nourish the soil
by adding nutrients. It will also improve soil structure and attract earthworms, which in turn improves the overall health of your soil further.
Useful Tips:
- Walk, bike, or carpool instead of driving to work or school by yourself
- Install energy efficient lights and turn them off when walk out of the room
- Wash your dishes by hand. Dishwashers use a huge amount of water and energy
- Hang your laundry out to dry instead of using the dryer
- Have a compost bucket
- Buy locally, Camana Bay hosts a farmers market every Wednesday afternoon and Saturday morning

The materials you will need are...
1. Start by drilling scattered holes on the bottom and around the bin (It depends on how big your bin is on how many holes you should drill. You want enough for circulation but not so many that compost is poking out the side of the bin)

HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR BIN!
Your bin will need to have equal amounts of green matter (plant remains/ veg. and fruit scraps) which provides nitrogen and brown matter (dried leaves, soil) which add carbon this in addition to air and water help make composting fast and easy. Maintaining your compost bin is relatively easy if you allow aeration in your bin by turning the mixture every week, keep the mix moist, and adding a compost activator like blood meal or organic soil. The composting process can take up to six months but can be faster in higher temperatures. Once the mixture is fully composted add it to your garden for an extra surge of nutrient for your plants!
